Set at the end of the Edo period, in those years a lot of things changed to let enter the Land of the Rising Sun into modernity. But for common people, the “end of the Bakufu” (this is the translation of the Bakumatsu term) was seen as an actual upheaval of their lives.
For example, during this renewal, many foreign traders reached the ports of Nagasaki, Hakodate, and Yokohama causing some problems for Japanese people, and the samurai cast lost its power after many centuries. Due to this hordes of them had abandoned their clans to fight under the banner of the Emperor.
Swords and ideals collide!
To prevent a heavier escalation of violence – that further worsens this explosive situation – all over the country, the Shinsengumi were created. We can translate it as “Newly Selected Corps.” Their mission was to patrol the city day and night. Since its formation, Shinsengumi’s exploits created around it an aura of legend; and this aura has been expanded through the decades with movies, TV series, manga, anime, and above all the wonderful video game series entitled Hakuoki!
Starting on 18th September 2008 with the release of Hakuoki ~Shinsengumi Kitan~ for PlayStation 2, the series became a real multimedia mix project that also included 17 musicals enriched by songs, dances, and… extremely exciting sword fights.
