No lie, rumors, and news about an eventual Dark Souls Remastered for the current generation was pretty much water cooler talk for us on a daily basis; the original Dark Souls was an all-time staff favorite – its notions on samsara – the cycle of life, death, and struggle somehow struck a chord with our day to day travails in the office.

For every time something negatively happened and being in surrounded constantly with a gaming culture, it’s only fitting we’d just say, “WELL, I BEAT DARK SOULS BITCH!” as if it was a mantra for defeating unsurmountable odds for that sweet sense of achievement. So, when the official announcement was made by our friends at Bandai Namco about the Remaster, you can only imagine the amount of sun praising that’s been going around the cubicles. In fact, we only really communicate in gestures right now (efficacy pending).

Interoffice hijinks aside, and having already a set date for our annual leaves during that release week, there’s just so much to take in. Early announcements have stated that the Remaster will have better graphics, framerates, and dedicated servers for better online matchmaking with an increase to 6 players.

And while this is great an all, these are the things that we’re really excited about:

1. Blight Town

Any conversation with a Dark Souls veteran will bring up the framerate topic of Blight Town. There’s a lot of hate out there! Getting chased by Man Eater Mildred while ganked by the constant barrage of giant mosquitos is already quite the challenge for a first timer, but when the framerate stutters like an awkward first date, it’s just unnecessarily anxiety-inducing. It’s great to see that this will be fixed, especially since Blight Town in terms of level design is quite well made; just because the environment looks rickety doesn’t mean the framerate should be, and we look forward to traipsing through a poisonous swamp with nary a care.

2. Lost Izalith, Lost Assets

Near end game, when the player character has pretty much maxed out their sick equips, learned all the tricks the game has been teaching them, we’re given this extremely linear level with not much going on, at least in comparison to the buildup. On record, even director Hidetaka Miyazaki has been quoted on his thoughts on this level with:

Don’t want to elaborate on this very much. There was a different person assigned to this area, and although I was involved, I don’t want to pose very many negative comments for his sake. It can be a learning experience for all of us.

In essence, Lost Izalith was apparently incomplete and rushed due to the final boss of deadlines, and unfortunately many players felt this, as it came across as the weakest part of the entire game, suffering from framerate drops, rehashed enemies and strange placement, and a boss that just doesn’t seem to fit the context of the game at all.

While we know that there will not be any new assets created for the game, fans have previously found unused content which we would hope would be implemented into this new version. To what degree we may not know, but it would be great if the FromSoftware team took a little more time and gave Lost Izalith the Dark Souls 2: Scholars of the First Sin treatment or at least stay true to their original vision. At the end of the day, this tweak would be greatly appreciated, since the original was incomplete at best.

Oh and Bear Armor and the unused Undead King Jar-Eel boss – adding the former just for fashion souls… have you seen it?

3. Portable Souls

Just knowing that we’ll be able to play Dark Souls on the go is really the best. I mean there’s not much more to be said here except for maybe it’s time to buy a Switch? The interesting thing to take away is that if the first title can be on the Switch, then it’s also possible that Dark Souls 2 can possibly make its way there as well. Just make sure you wear the strap; we can’t keep track of all the times we’ve thrown our controllers with the original.

So, in the meantime, these are the main things we’re looking forward to post-announcement. In fact, call us crazy, but maybe, just maybe, we’ll eventually see a Demon Souls remastered too? As fans, we can only hope.

And for the new players? Always choose the pendant as your starting item. Trust us.
