What is Singles’ Day?

According to some research, Singles’ Day or Guanggu Jie in China (Chinese: 光棍节; pinyin: Guānggùn Jié; Wade–Giles: Kuang-kun chieh) is a holiday that is popular among the Chinese youth that celebrates the pride of being single. This annual event kicks off on the midnight of November 11th and it runs for 24 hrs. This is China’s counterpart of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, however, Singles’ Day is bigger than these two mentioned annual sale events.
The date, November 11th was chosen because the number 1 represents an individual who is alone. It’s also become a popular date to celebrate romantic connections with over 4,000 couples being wed in Beijing, China in the year 2011. This annual holiday sale has become the largest offline and online shopping day in the world with Alibaba shoppers that transcends up to 168.2 billion yuan ($25.4 billion) during in the year 2017.
Origins
Singles’ Day was originated at Nanjing University in 1993. After that, it was spread to other universities in China during the 1990s. The holiday was named “Singles’ Day” because of the date, 11/11 (November 11th) which embodied four single people. There were several theories on the history of Singles’ Day but the most widely accepted theory that this day was originated in the four walls of Nanjing University’s dorm.
One of the origins that four male students of Nanjing University’s Mingcaowuzhu (means all single men) in the walls of their dorm discussed how they could break away from the boredom of being single. They agreed to take pride in being single on November 11. It widespread throughout the university until it reached to the contemporary Chinese culture, tradition, and society.
Another theory was based around a romantic relationship of a Nanjing University student, Mu Guang Kun. His girlfriend died in cancer that he mourned on the nearby rooftops as he lit up some candles. His roommates joined him to keep him company.
