Between 1348 and 1350; the whole of Europe was devastated by an epidemic that left between a third and one half of the population dead. Known in the years ahead as Black Death; this plague was caused by the bacterium Yersinia Pestis. Discovered by the Swiss bacteriologist Alexandre Yersin the infection caused by it killed about 25 million people, and due to this health apocalypse, many human activities including the religious and the philosophical ones have been changed dramatically forever in a very short time.

For example; the Roman Catholic Church lost its monopoly over the salvation of souls because of an increasing number of new mystic beliefs which promise a certain rebirth in heaven. Even the art world portrayed the spread of this disease in a lot of different ways and styles. But the greatest change can be found in medicine; indeed thanks to this catastrophe, physicians started to do autopsies more frequently to find the causes of illnesses, focusing primarily on surgical operations. If you’ve ever read Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales or Giovanni Boccaccio’s Decameron or if you’ve seen one of the several Danse Macabre works of art spread throughout the whole Europe; you can easily imagine how during the Middle-Ages life and death were strictly connected each other.

Movies like Black Death, The Navigator: A Medieval Odyssey, Season of the Witch or Flesh+Blood along with video games such as Knights Contract, and Age of Empires II faithfully described how was the life during that ephemeral era. Anyway, in case you’d like to discover more about this tragic outbreak, the French developer Asobo Studio comes to our aid with a new kind of adventure that will catapult us in broad Middle-Ages.
