Once again…welcome to my house. Come freely. Go safely; leave something of the happiness you bring.
― Bram Stoker, Dracula

Compiled since May 3, 1890, during a business trip in the Carpathian Mountains; the young British solicitor Jonathan Harker couldn’t know that his letters and diary notes would become a classic of the literature. When the Irish author Bram Stoker found them, he put all these materials together to give birth to the greatest Victorian Gothic Novel of all time: Dracula!
Published for the first time in 1897; this great book laid the basis of the modern horror genre, especially in vampire fiction. But who was the Prince of the Night? At the very beginning, he’s described as a thin, with a long white mustache set under an aquiline nose, pointed ears and sharp teeth. He is dressed all in black and has hair on his palms who simply want to sell his castle located in Transylvania to start a new life in London, but actually, behind this mask, there’s a lot more. Indeed, Dracula or better the Count Dracula is a vampire, but not a common one; he’s one of the most ancient members of his kind. Despite his classy manners; when angered he reveals his true nature when his piercing blue eyes flaming red.

Able to use a large number of supernatural powers including the ability to change form at will, and communicate with animals; Bram Stoker forgot to list the (probably) greatest one: the skill to become a globally hugely popular pop-icon! This not his fault anyway, indeed when released Dracula didn’t sell very well, and in 1913 Stoker’s widow was forced due to financial problems to sell the original notes and outlines of the novel for little more then £2. But the fate plays strange; in 1922 F.W. Murnau, a German expressionist movie director, filmed the unauthorized adaptation of the book entitled Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror, and only from that year the popularity of Dracula started to grow enormously.
Thanks to this legendary movie; throughout the decades the figure of the count has appeared in thousands of different opuses such as movies, comics, radio & TV dramas, ballets, and video games!

Without any doubt, the most popular gaming series starring Dracula is Castlevania (悪魔城ドラキュラ). Originally released for the Famicom Disk System in 1986; the first installment tells the story of Simon Belmont, the most renowned of vampire hunters. Wielding the mystical Holy Whip, in this first episode, Simon must run, jump, and slash hundreds of monsters to destroy the Demon Castle, and kill the king of the vampires once for all. Considered a true gem; Game Informer & Nintendo Power have inserted it in their lists of best video games ever created.
Obviously, with these premises Castlevania could not be relegated to a single episode; indeed, so far 30 chapters have been released, and each of them has added a tile to the complex Belmont clan’s history. In any case remember the origins is always a good thing; this is why from today you can [re]play the most beloved eight installments on your PS4, NS, and XB1 with Castlevania Anniversary Collection!
