And when I had seen him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying: Fear not. I am the First and the Last,
And alive, and was dead. And behold I am living for ever and ever and have the keys of death and of hell.
– St. John the Apostle, Apocalypse (1:17, 1:18)

The blasphemy is a concept old as the birth of the gods; since ancient Greece, where there were dozens of divinities, not all humans worship them in a very proper way. If from one side we have religious people from the other we can find a lack of veneration or actual insults addressed to them.
For example, in Book II of Socrate’s Republic; we can read a dialogue between the philosopher, Glaucon, and Adimantus on the origins of Justice and Injustice. At the certain point, they discuss the false stories of Homer and Hesiod; which have written bad things about the gods and the heroes, this lack of faith, according to Socrates, corrupt the people and the place in which they live in. This is the first description of the idea of blasphemy, and since then millions of different people use it in order to ironized over the most traditional aspects of their society and customs. We can say, from a certain point of view, that in some cases it helped to move forward creating a new culture.
Another example can be found within the Voltaire’s Philosophical Dictionary that due to religious reasons (a.k.a. blasphemy) has been banned from the Vatican, and inserted in the Index Librorum Prohibitorum (List of Prohibited Books) since 1765.

Even contemporary pop-culture sometimes can be considered blasphemous from the rulers of certain countries to censor all those cultural products who can show disrespect for society performing opuses that could lead to disrupts social order.
Among them we can find Mel Gibson’s movie The Passion of the Christ, Harry Potter’s books which have been recently banned from a Catholic school in Nashville because of the presence of  “actual curses and spells”, and video games such as the astonishing 2D metroidvania Blasphemous for PS4, NS & XB1!
