Established in 1977 by Dr. Vivian Horner; who previously worked at the Bank Street College of Education in NYC before and the National Foreign Language Center later. The Nickelodeon name originates from a theatre of the early 1900s in which “nickel” was the admission price (five cents), and “odeon” the ancient Greek term for theater (ᾨδεῖον). But, at the very beginning, Nickelodeon was known with a totally different name: Pinwheel Network; only two years later, in 1979, the network adopted the name with which is famous today.

Its initial programming was built by only five shows: Pinwheel, Video Comics, America Goes Bananaz, Nickel Flicks, and By the Way; the second one is particularly interesting because thanks to it, a lot of DC comic books where narrated on TV for all the children who weren’t yet able to read.
