Splatoon – We’re hooked on a feeling!
We don’t live in a monochromatic world!
Our planet is filled with hundreds of millions of colors. They give us inspiration, courage, cheerfulness, and many other sensations thanks to which we can live a better life. More than a simple interaction of light with electrons. From a scientific point of view, colors can change hugely due to the chemical conditions of a body, and in nature, a lot of animals exploited this characteristic to evolve and survive.
For example, the blue of a sapphire and the blue of a blueberry are very different because their structure and how the light waves interact with them are different.
Obviously, we’re surrounded by colors. Since ancient times humankind has tried to explain how our eyes perceive them. And for the Greek philosopher Empedocles of Akragas – one of the first to write about colors – this perception is the result of two activities:
1) Eyes shoot a sort of ray of light
2) Objects produce an emanation
Thanks to them, and to the four elements present in nature (earth, water, air, fire) people are able to see the four primary colors: white, black, red, and yellowish green. The theory of Empedocles produced the “four colors doctrine”, that influenced not only the way to see the world but also medicine. In fact, the father of medical art, Hippocrates, linked them to the four main body fluids.
Colors speak louder!
With the passing of time, a lot of artists, scholars, and intellectuals tried to formulate their own theories of color. Avicenna, Aristotle, Leonardo da Vinci, and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe are only an infinitesimal part of the people that studied colors. As you maybe already know, nowadays especially in video games, colors are strictly connected with emotions.
And there’s only one title that can mix all these colors and feelings into an actual masterwork: Splatoon!
Created by Yusuke Amano & Tsubasa Sakaguchi, and originally released in 2015 on the Nintendo WiiU; Splatoon is an explosion of colors and fun!
Addictive like a few other games. Its 90s aesthetic, its unforgettable music, and its charismatic characters contributed to making the series the most popular on Nintendo Switch. And we must not forget that its uniqueness left its mark anywhere winning a lot of awards like the SXSW Gaming Awards, the Japan Game Awards, the British Academy Children’s Awards, and many other prestigious ones.
Giving a total repaint to the dull grey of the world. Splatoon’s Inklings and Octolings left the Splatlands to reach our cities bringing an insanely cool dose of calendars, cushions, plushes, etc., all of them are truly inkredible!!!
