Atelier series: Let’s play with science!
Magic: acts or occurrences that are wondrous and inexplicable through conventional natural means.
With this definition, we can start a journey back in time, more precisely to the seventeenth century, when some men and women used this kind of art to help common people to solve a big number of problems that affected their lives. In particular, two practices were extensively used at that time: astrology and alchemy. While the previous was used to “explore” the movement of the celestial bodies to know the things to come, we can consider the latter as the rise of science, thanks to which the practitioners tried to get the “real knowledge” that is separated from all the other esoteric theories.
Everything is made of elements!
Carrying on a scientific revolution, the work of the alchemists like Isaac Newton or Robert Boyle could demonstrate that – in contrast to the witch-hunting texts – all the apparently unexplained phenomena are not satanic activities, but a physical reality that can be demonstrated through intellectual coherence, analysis, pieces of evidence, and discussions. They could present in universities and scientific circles that there are things that exist outside of the conventional natural order, and all of them can be discovered with rationality.
Year by year, Alchemy arrived in our era. Accordingly the Rediscovery of Aristotle, the alchemical art played an important role in the creation of early modern science (particularly chemistry and medicine). And we can find it not only in philosophical or historical writings but also in more pop-opuses. Fullmetal Alchemist, Dragon Quest, Castlevania, Harry Potter, and Final Fantasy; are only some of them deeply connected with alchemical symbolism. In fact, in all of them, this Art is expressed to get new items and save the world(s) from certain ruin. But while in these, the presence of alchemy plays a secondary role in the outcome of the story; there’s a series in which it is the most important thing we’re referring to the Atelier series!
Alchemic Blast!
The godmother of this long-life beloved alchemic JRPG series is Marie, the main protagonist of Atelier Marie: The Alchemist of Salburg. Released on May 23, 1997, for the first PlayStation; this title introduced to thousands of gamers all around the world the roots of alchemy as a means to create new items that could be sold to the people of Salburg, the capital city of the fantastic Schigsal Kingdom.
Helping her to improve her skills and abilities in the fine art of synthesizing; Marie could reach even more popularity and money that allow her to meet the most prestigious people in the whole kingdom making her workshop the #1 in the world. Atelier games have come a long way since then, and generations of new alchemists required our help to develop their laboratories throughout the world; we remember Iris, Khemia, Rorona, Totori, Meruru, Firis, Lulua, and last but not least Ryza!
For more than 25 years, the Atelier series helped millions of gamers all around the world to achieve the Perfection of the human body through the creation of the elixir of immortality, and panaceas able to cure any disease. As you maybe already know; every Atelier episode eviscerates a specific theme which is also the cornerstone of the episodes.
