But pretty that’s much like Dark Souls, isn’t it? You’re just minding your own business as the chosen undead, and boom – the red phantom invasion sound effect comes up which is still fine – there’s nothing you can’t handle since you’ve been gettin’ good, but he’s running at you with some weapon you’ve never seen. And before you can even react to the “YOU DIED” prompt, the only thing on your mind is, “I hate this game!” or “I want that weapon!” So, you just keep on trying, and in this case, it’s mashing the reset button on your browser or click here to sign up for our Personal Agent notifications and who knows? And such a lucky fan you would be! With the recent announcement of Dark Souls Remastered, we all expected some sort of bundle to commemorate this event, and frankly, this PlayStation 4 trilogy set is something to behold. And this is where The Dark Souls Trilogy Collection comes in. Sure, you get all three titles each with their respective DLCs, and the soundtrack collection scored by baroque gothic genius, Motoi Sakuraba, (perfect music for camping from our experience), 10 art prints of defining moments, a display frame, and special box packaging, but that’s quite standard now, especially in 2018.

What really makes us want to stick a hand into a Mimic wilfully are the themed bookends and the item compendiums; this is perhaps where things get crazy nerdy. Remember the original box-art for Dark Souls? The one where it’s a knight diving into an abyss? Without any spoilers, let’s just say that this small detail would end up adding to the lore of the game itself, tantamount to the creative attention that Miyazaki and the entire dev team would carry throughout the experience of all three titles. To honour this aesthetic, we have this amazing bookend:
On a surface glance, it’s a skilful representation of a familiar scene in the beginning of the game; you’ve Oscar, Knight of Astora, the first NPC that the player ever encounters, standing ready to meet the said player to start them on their hallowed journey. The clear division of the walls depicts the labyrinthine challenge for finding safety in the flame on the adjacent side; any Souls player will find an anxious solace knowing that the bonfire is close.
In between this division are where the item compendiums go – three encyclopaedias per title including every single item and their accompanying flavor text; when you put the books where they are meant to be, the complete arrangement almost suggests that in Dark Souls, one must acquire all knowledge to find the path to rekindle the flame. And when one takes all the books out, by doing so, the bookends connect and become a diorama?! What? Is Priscilla the child of Gywnevere and Seath? Is Manus the Furtive Pygmy? Was the pendant useless all along? Full Havel’s set is a noob’s choice?
Yeah. Mind-blowing stuff. We know. Or least pretend to until there’s an official statement from Bandai Namco or FromSoftware, but again, this is also what Dark Souls is about – focusing on the minutiae and putting the pieces together, quite literally with this fantastic bookend.
