Bande dessinée is the French term for comic strips. Even if often ignored by the artistic world, bande dessinée have illustrious ancestors; well-renowned artists like Félix Nadar, Gustave Doré, or Caran d’Ache bring their art to the masses. This fact helped this particular form of art to get out of the children’s magazines ghetto; reaching thousands of adults who praised these comics for their artistic value. Due to this, series like Les Pieds Nickelés, Zig et Puce, Cri-Cri, and many other ones earned a sort of “legitimization” from the adults encouraging a big number of aspiring illustrators & writers to throw themselves into this new form of art.

Anyway, it’s only in 1929 that we can witness the very first bande dessinée global phenomenon; when on Le Petit Vingtième, a children’s supplement to the newspaper XXe siècle, the first Tintin adventure appeared: Tintin au pays des Soviets.
Enriched by an incredible documentary accuracy, through the years Tintin described the various contemporary political scenes of the countries including Japan, China, or Germany; showing them with clear outlines, bright colors, and geometrical precision. This faithfulness to history, motivated two young men called René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo to bring to light a little Gaul who oppose to the huge Roman Empire; Asterix.

Appeared on October 29, 1959; Asterix is a smart and clever warrior who lives in the little but proud Indomitable village. Located in the northern part of Gaul (present-day France); this is the only village in the whole country that the Romans couldn’t conquer. The reason behind it is the one and only magic potion prepared by the druid Getafix; capable to provide super strength to everyone who drinks it. Through 38 volumes, 10 animated movies, 1 theme park, and 29 video games; Asterix, Obelix, and all the other inhabitants of the Indomitable village vanquished the armies led by Julius Caesar to the cry of… These Romans are crazy!
