NieR:Automata Ver 1.1a – Do Androids Watch Anime?

The Last of Us, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Cyberpunk 2077, Mega Man Zero, and Final Fantasy VII, do you know what these titles have in common? Exactly, all of them are set in a dystopian era!
Referred to indicate a nightmarish world, the term dystopia was created by John Stuart Mill, an English philosopher, and economist in 1868. But the term started to be popular among the masses only after World War II when it became an actual literary genre thanks to masterpieces like Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury; The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood; We by Yevgeny Zamyatin; 1984 by George Orwell; and Brave New World by Aldous Huxley.

In all of these novels, we are catapulted into an era where the societies reached their ends, and only a few determined people try to change things to restore a sort of “golden age” for all the humans out there… more than simple stories, in every dystopian work – and we’re not referring to books only but also to movies and video games – we may find a warning message about what the Earth could become in the next years from many points of views. One of these potential realities can be clearly experienced in NieR: Automata, which is one of the greatest Action-RPG games of all time!
Set in the year 11945, in Nier: Automata we follow the stories of 2B, 9S, and A2; three combat androids of YoRHa, an elite android military force, created by the Council of Humanity before leaving the planet for the Moon when the alien machines conquered the Earth.

Androids, Machines, and Humans…

Leaving them completely alone, the war between androids and machines has lasted for millennia without any signals from the aliens, while the Council of Humanity only broadcasts short messages at regular intervals. Bringing dystopian post-humanist concepts to millions of people all around the world, as Hideo Kojima did with Metal Gear Solid, even Yoko Taro with Nier: Automata wants to demonstrate that humankind cannot escape from war, hate, and tragedy.

Guided by our decisions, YoRHa androids descend on our planet trying to put an end to a conflict that has no more reason to continue. In this masterpiece, the world is seen as a “prison” from which there is no escape. Due to its complexity, through the years the sociological and ethical implications it has been transcended the digital universe trying to find the answers to fundamental questions of how we may best live together through novels, audio dramas, manga, unforgettable live events that mix legendary music with new revelations about the story, and now an anime series!
